Hi! I’m Sarah. I want to tell you something about my town. In my town you can see a lot of things. We have a museum where you can explore the history of the town. You can walk in the park with your dog. In the mall you can watch shows where people sing and dance every Saturday. Of course, you can also visit the zoo. And everyone can enjoy a visit to the new swimming-pool. And don’t forget the aquarium, where you can see beautiful fish and seals. There’s a lot to do in our town! I love living here!

Hi Malik!

How are you? I’m exhausted. I walked 15 kilometers with my friend Peter on the weekend. It was a sponsored walk to raise money for children in need. We started at 6 o’clock in the morning. It was too early for me. I wasn’t awake! We only stopped for about ten minutes for lunch. We finished at five o’clock. Mom made us a huge meal. Then we watched a movie on TV. Peter came over. We were in bed by eight o’clock! It was really hard, but I collected $100. We gave it all to the children!

Sebastian, 15, the youngest person to sail solo across the Atlantic

Sunday
I woke up and noticed that I was only 25 kilometers from the end of my journey. If I’d slept any longer, I’d have hit the rocks, and my boat would have sunk. At first light, I sailed into Antigua harbor. I jumped off the boat and almost fell over. It felt strange being on land.

Wednesday

I turned 16 today, and it was time to go home. At the airport, I was presented with a huge cake that I shared with the other passengers. I looked down from the plane and thought, “I’ve been sailing across that ocean for more than three weeks and now it’s taking just a few hours to get home.”

Friday

For weeks, I’ve been looking forward to a hot bath and my own bed. And now I can have both. But I haven’t been looking forward to going back to school. I have lots of work to do before Monday!

Hollywood
Between 1907 and 1913, a Los Angeles district called Hollywood became the center of the American movie
industry. People loved going to the movies, and they went to the new movie theaters several times a week. Movie theaters were usually in the poorer neighborhoods, especially in immigrant districts. Many of the theater owners themselves were immigrants from Eastern Europe. By the 1920s, moviegoers all over the world were waiting impatiently for the next new movie from Hollywood. The movies at this time were silent, so they had universal appeal: without language, they could be understood everywhere. The first star of the silent movies was Charlie Chaplin. Movies made huge profits and created international stars. They changed the way millions of people thought about the world because they showed them places and ways of life that they had never seen.
